The area that is now known as Sun City West was formerly a working cattle ranch 45 minutes northwest of Phoenix, Arizona. The Del Webb Corporation bought the land in 1971 and began the master plan for future development of the area. Sun City West is an unincorporated age restricted community just two and one half miles west of Sun City. The first residents moved into their new homes in October of 1978. Since then, Sun City West has continued to grow and evolve into one of the foremost communities of its kind Since it is an Age Restricted community, at least one member of each household must be 55 year of age and no permanent resident can be under 19 year of age. However, there is no age restriction on ownership. Sun City West is home to approximately 31,000 people and four recreation centers. Between them there are 3 indoor and 3 outdoor swimming pools. The Sun City West Posse, another volunteer organization, has approximately 200 members under the direct authorization of the Maricopa County Sheriff. While the primary function of the Posse is crime prevention, members are trained in several different programs that benefit the community. They respond to fire, medical and accident calls. They perform home security patrols, neighborhood watch programs, and vacation inspection services. The Posse is funded by contributions from the homeowners and the business people of Sun City West, Interfaith Community Care is a non-profit, non-sectarian human services agency formed to meet the special needs of the community by assisting individuals to remain living independently in their own home. They provide services regardless of the recipient?s inability to pay. The Handi-Capables Club is a chartered club of The Recreation Centers of Sun City. The purpose is to plan programs and recreational activities of interest and benefit to Sun City residents who have a lasting physical disability.
