Letting A Client Go

Once every once in a while, it happens. It might be an “uh oh” feeling in your stomach, or maybe a tangled web of confused misunderstandings, or even some challenges by the client of your professional policies. It could be a potential client whom you have met with or it could be a current client. Recently in a conversation with Barb, she said these words. “I feel I am not the one to meet your needs.” She said this in a conversation about a situation where a client needed to be released. I love the grace of these words. The client may decide to ‘shape up’ so that they can work with you or it is nice way to let them go.

If ever there is a situation when you feel your business practices will be compromised (legally or ethically), or you feel threatened verbally or physically, or if you even just cannot seem to be able to communicate clearly with the client; it is ok to detach. It is ok to say, “I’m not the one to meet your needs.” Your mental and physical health, your company’s health, even your pocketbook will be stronger in the end. Stay firm in your beliefs and remember that you have the right to choose your clients just as your clients choose you.
